Choosing where you learn to fly.

Choosing where you learn to fly is a challenge. Without flying experience you may not appreciate what is and isn’t important. The choice is likely based on faulty knowledge.

My comparisons of schools were based on three things. They were time, price and the location of the ground school. I wanted a convenient ground school location, and I wanted I short classroom time. Last, I wanted a good price.

With hindsight there was only one that turned out to matter. It was ground school. Time and price paled in comparison.

Ground school will teach you what you need to pass the written exam. There are different options available. You can take it online, one on one or in a classroom setting.

Ground-school is often located at an airport, but it can also be off. It can involve night or daytime classes. Evening classes can be an excellent idea for a mature student. For a full time student a daytime airport location can be better.

If you have an option does not depend on an online course. The material is too dense and technical to lend itself easily to self-study. A lively and experienced pilot who can bring flying experience and practical application to the subject matter.

There are basic and supplemental texts to use. The basics will come from the ground school. Supplemental texts are available as well. You can get these from the ground school, Amazon, or pilot schools.

You can add to your education through the internet. There are pod casts put out by flight instructors. There are also online study guides. Some are just for the student license exam. Others are for the whole course.

To summarize, you can rank flying schools before you get experience based on the ground school. Location and time of class is important. A ground school with an experienced teacher is preferable. If the school will direct you to or supply you with additional resources it’s an even better candidate.

If you want to learn to fly you need to study the PSTAR. This is very important for bush pilot training. Find out more at www.bushpilotintraining.com.

Basic V-Speeds

Pilots regularly make use of the expression “fly by the numbers”, and trust me, in flying there can be a ton of numbers. One group of fundamental numbers are the V-speeds. V-speeds are standard speeds that are important to get precision flight, and by precise flight I do not indicate some form of formation flying – I am talking about the sort of basic flying you actually undertake when you fly. They are rates of speed you should know, and in reality, my teacher requested that I know them before he’d let me solo.

There are many V speeds, and of course a lot more for a lot of aeroplanes than you’ll find for others. As an example, there exists one particular speed called VLE, which is the max speed you may fly with the landing equipment extended. That speed only pertains to planes with retracting landing gear. I’ve got a fixed gear Cessna C-150L, thus my personal aircraft does not have a VLE.

The 1st V-speed is VR, or rotation rate. Rotation rate is the particular speed at which, when you’re moving down the runway upon take-off, you pull back upon the yoke and depart the ground. A 150 rotates at fifty-five mph (plus it gets there reasonably fast – you utilize full power, check the gauges and you’re virtually there).

When you have taken off you will need to land, and that will require going slower as much as possible while nevertheless maintaining management in addition to flying. That introduces the 2nd V-speed – the stall speed (VS). Stalling will be when the plane no longer has sufficient lift to keep it flying.

There’s no less than a couple of stall speeds – flaps all the way up as well as flaps down. Flaps right down provides much more lift, as a result a lower stall rate. In my 150 the VS is 48 mph, meaning that with full flaps it will fly as slow as 48 mph at a gross weight of 1600 pounds before it stalls. Although landing at a slow speed is easier on the airplane, you still need some airspeed to maintain control. I actually land closer to 65-70 mph airspeed.

The third V-speed is VS1, or clean stall speed. This is the stall speed at gross weight, but with flaps up. Flaps up is clean, flaps down is dirty. VS1 is 54 mph.

When you want to land you have to slow down (there’s an old saying “slow down to go down”). One way to do that is to reduce power, raise the nose of the airplane, and apply flaps. The amount that you apply can vary, but what you can’t do is apply flaps at too high a speed. Too much airspeed and you’ll damage the flaps. That brings us to the fourth V-speed, VFE, or maximum flap extended speed. On the airspeed indicator a white line begins below this speed, so its easy to see when you’re in safe flap range. VFE for my 150 is 100 mph.

Riflescope Upgrade

One of the reasons I’m learning to fly is to get into the back country and hunt. I’ve always liked remote areas. I’ve also always liked moose hunting. I’ve been around it since I was about six.

I hunt moose with a Winchester Model 70 Featherlite. It’s a .308, and I got it from my dad. He, in turn, got it from his brother back in 1965. It’s been around a while. I don’t know a lot about guns, but I know I like this Featherlite.

The rifle has a scope, and in 1965 it was a good quality scope. The problem is, it’s not 1965 anymore. Scopes today are much better simply as a result of improved technology. The glass is better, and the scopes offer zoom technology.

During the past three hunting seasons I’ve seen lot’s of moose. Three were at long range. One I shot, and two I let go. I think I could have gotten both of the ones I passed up. However, I think that before I could take those shots I would need a range finder and a higher power scope. With that in mind I recently purchased a new scope for the old rifle.

The new scope is also a Bushnell. However, instead of being a Scope Chief it is an Elite. Instead of being a 4 power single range scope, it’s a 3x-10x, meaning it can magnify over a range from three times to ten times.

Scopes seem confusing. The salespeople I ran across didn’t make them less so. I am a pro salesman, and I wasn’t impressed. They were nice enough people, but they made it seem like a very arcane science that the uninitiated couldn’t penetrate.

When I heard that mounting the scope would run $100 I decided I’d do it myself. I thought it couldn’t be too hard. Besides, it would be a learning experience. I don’t want to be one of those guys who can’t care for his own gear.

Changing one scope for another can be very easy. In this case I use the same mounts, and only change the rings. The result is that all I’m doing is undoing screws.

Locating Snapping Turtle Nests

Snapping Turtles are powerful, enduring and delightful creatures that have been around for millions of years. Their evolution occurred earlier than other turtles and their rugged design hasn’t changed since. While the common snapping turtle has a wide distribution and strong numbers, in northern portions of the United States there can be merely 1-5 snappers per hectacre. Numbers within the southern United States can be more promising and have as many as 65 snapping turtles per hectacre. The alligator snapping turtle, on the other hand, is considered threatened and is protected by law in numerous states. The snapping turtle in fact, can lay clutches of 20-50 eggs, but only about 133 of every 1,300 eggs survive to depart the nest. Out of those 133 hatchlings, just 1 will survive to adulthood. Most eggs and hatchlings fall victim to predation within the first 36 months of life, if not before they even hatch. What some groups do is protect the nests and capture hatchlings when they climb out. These hatchlings will then be raised for about 3 years and released to the wild or just transported to the nearest lake safely.

The hardest part of conserving and studying snapping turtle nests is, undoubtedly, finding a nest. Snapping turtles lay eggs on dry land, clear of flood planes. Often it is about 100-500 meters from the female’s usual habitat, but it sometimes can be as much as a mile away. Quite often we have seen these turtle nests in odd placeslike front lawns, man-made mulch hiking trails, gravel in the shoulder of roads, and even loose gravel driveways. Between lawn mowers, foot traffic, and car tires, these turtles are definitely not stacking the odds of survival in their favor. I personally have raised snapping turtle hatchlings that I have found seeking to cross 3 or 4 roads to get to a water source that would seem to be a two day marathon for the little guy.

Locating a snapping turtle nest

*Knowing when: Snapping turtles dig their nest and lay eggs in May and June. If you are stalking for a nest, you can start during early May. (We’ll explain in a bit) If you are scouting for a nest, you can do this through July and August.

*Scouting for a nest: This is the hardest and the most unsuccessful means of finding a nest. This involves pacing the perimeter of a portion of a pond or lake, starting at about 40 yards out and incrementally moving farther from the water. Doing a complete sweep of a section of land, be on the lookout for a circle, about 10 inches in diameter, of loose, tilled up dirt. This is often on high ground in grassy spots, leafy spots, mulch, sometimes slightly recessed. See how this can be difficult? It could be anywhere up to a mile away from water.

Summer Camp Choices for a Home Schooled Child

Summer camp can benefit the life of homeschooling camps help children in so many ways. Home School Summer Camps provide safe and fun opportunities for children of all ages and backgrounds to learn independence. An important step in growing up comes when a child uses what he or she has learned at home to make choices in a broadened environment.

homeschool camps can work in harmony with home schooling. Home school parents needn’t hesitate to give their child opportunities to test his or her education. Education grows stronger with challenge. Summer camp can help parents get children ready for life on their own. At summer camp, staff members encourage perseverance and listening, giving further reach to the principles already learned in home schooling. Campers learn the value of teamwork. In the camp environment children see successful behavior firsthand and learn to achieve it themselves.

Director of Swift Nature Camp,Jeff Lorenz, says that “Summer Camp provides children the chance to be independent and assume leadership roles. Without parents or siblings around, campers often discover their capability to show responsibility, thus improving self-confidence when they return back home”.

Picking a summer camp requires effort and research, but the reward can be profound experience and lifelong memories. The size of a camp population is a first criterion for selecting the right camp for a home schooled child. Smaller camps in which children are likely to receive more frequent individual attention are the place to begin; the attention a home schooled child is accustomed to can find smoother transition to the new wider social setting of a camp environment.

Summer camps offer a wide variety of accommodations to choose from for fitting the camp environment to a homeschooler’s comfort level. If a child is age seven and under and has never been away from home a day camp program may be the best choice. An overnight camp may be a better fit for a child age 8 and above who is ready to be away from home.

Overnight residential summer camps offer home schooled children a new and exciting opportunity to socialize with other children in a supervised environment. Lasting friendships are made at camp. Many campers return every summer, some going on to participate in a Counselor in Training programs for teens. Campers can eventually become counselors and pass on the worthwhile experiences of camp to new younger campers.
